On Thursday 30 April, Ledley King will be attending a celebratory event to mark 125 years of football at Wanstead Flats Playing Fields in Epping Forest. The event will take place at the Harrow Road Pavilion, Harrow Road, E11 3QA.
To launch the anniversary, the City of London Corporation have organised several small sided football matches including local primary schools and East Living FC, a mental health football project. These will take place from 11.00am. At approximately 11.30am Ledley King – a footballing legend who played over 300 games for Tottenham Hotspur FC and 21 times for England, and whom began his own footballing career on Wanstead Flats Playing Fields – will present commemorative medals to the players. The FA Cup, which has a strong link with football played in Epping Forest, will be on show at the event.
The City of London Corporation began their historic agreement with the London Playing Fields Society (now Foundation) in 1890 and the Wanstead Flats Playing Fields have been an important and iconic venue in the community for grassroots football ever since. In addition to Ledley King, other footballing professionals who have enjoyed playing football at Wanstead Flats Playing Fields include John Terry, Jermain Defoe and Sol Campbell.
It will be a day to remember.
