Fitness in Mind is an award winning health and wellbeing initiative, formed to promote and provide sport and physical activity as an aid to mental wellbeing.
Established in January last year by Wayne Banks of Essex Mental Health Community and Nicky Smith of Brentwood Leisure Trust, with valuable insight from local residents with lived experience of poor mental health, the supported programme of activities aims to help inactive people overcome the psychological barriers that have prevented them from getting active in the past.
The project has already helped over 150 clients from a typically hard to reach proportion of the Essex community, offering fitness classes such as boxing, yoga, dance and mixed martial arts; sports groups including netball and football; and one-to-one gym support.
The Fitness In Mind team believe in harnessing a stigma-free environment that enables clients to face personal challenges, increase social interaction, and discover personal resources that can be used for years to come to make their lives more fulfilling.
The team are awaiting the outcome of a Community Sport Activation Fund application with Sport England to deliver a 3 year sustainable project throughout Brentwood, potentially enriching the lives of many more people.
The link below is a music video, created by the project’s clients and staff, to show their journey.
