Minister for Sport opens new facilities at Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre

The Minister for Sport, Tourism and Equalities Helen Grant has officially opened the brand new world class sports facilities at Bisham Abbey, the facility where many British Olympic medallists trained for the London 2012 Games.

The new facilities at Bisham Abbey come following a £7 million redevelopment project funded by Sport England.

The new facilities include 50 double or twin bedrooms, a workout class studio, a new restaurant and the Refuel café.

Improvement to the existing grass football pitches will compliment a new Desso football pitch (an exact replica of Wembley’s playing surface) and a 3G pitch which are already available to community users.
The new sports facilities are set to benefit the local community as well as elite athletes, including those working with the English Institute of Sport (EIS).

"Bisham Abbey is an iconic venue in British sport,” said the Minister for Sport.

"Its facilities have helped many of our elite athletes to prepare and train before representing their country in major sporting competitions.

"This impressive redevelopment project, funded by Sport England National Lottery money, will continue to make sure our athletes remain in the best possible condition to be successful.

"I’m also really pleased to see that it will offer excellent sporting facilities to be used by the community.”
The £7 million redevelopment also funded work for a larger gym floor, new state-of-the-art gym equipment, lifting platforms and new heavy weights lifting equipment.

A new changing pavilion and an increased number of car parking spaces have also been made available to all visitors.

"The newly refurbished facilities at Bisham Abbey reaffirm Sport England’s commitment to community and elite sport,” said Sport England Director of Property Charles Johnston.

"The improved facilities will give our top athletes the very best chance in competition, whilst giving the local community the opportunity to use world class facilities.”

Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre provides world-class training facilities to a wide range of National Governing Bodies and hosts the EIS High Performance Centre where top athletes can access sport science, medical and technological support to improve performances on the world stage.

The site also welcomes many community users.
