From this point on, the Community Sport Network team will no longer be sending out articles.

It was established in August 2013 as a free to access news-line on all things happening in Community Sport. It was set up as a small contribution to the legacy of London 2012 which inspired us all and will live long in our memories.

Nearly five years down the track there are now a number of other respected sporting news offerings online, so we thank you for your readership and support which has extended to over 200 countries, and wish you all well in your ongoing efforts to help create a fitter, healthier sporting nation.

Sporting Movement: The forgotten element of sport participation

With this week being the obesity awareness week, there will naturally be a lot of focus on participating in sport and physical activity. The physical health benefits of exercise have long been proclaimed and of course, it’s part of a healthy lifestyle. A quick google search shows that physical activity can help reduce weight, prevent cardiovascular disease, strengthen bones and muscles and more. 

Nowadays, there are numerous pieces of equipment available to aid in taking part in exercise, ranging from home gyms to apps for weight loss etc. Aside from the physical benefits, there is a myriad of other benefits for participation including mental health, social inclusion and education. These tend to form the objectives for sport-for-development, a niche in which The Sporting Movement would like to make a healthy contribution towards.

With all the benefits and add-ons, are we forgetting a key element of participation? Fun? Surely, that was what sport was supposed to be about? Looking at children, before they are taken hold of by technology, they run around not to prevent cardiovascular disease or control weight, they do it because they just enjoy it. Of course, facilitated by the use of technology and equipment, taking part in sport and physical activity for physical and non-physical benefits is perfectly acceptable. However, if more was done to help people find which forms of physical activity they really enjoyed aside from the mainstream sports. Is it possible that more people would continue participating? Would the benefits be a pleasant side-effect? 

Although participating for all the benefits mentioned is important and should continue to be encouraged strongly, there is an important factor which should always be kept in mind in the programme designing process "Sport-For-Fun”.
